Strengthening EU–Brazil collaboration in graphene and 2D materials

Ana Claudia from Fraunhofer ICT represented GIANCE at the Brazilian Materials Research Society (B-MRS) event in Curitiba, Brazil. She delivered an oral presentation entitled “European Graphene Alliance for Sustainable Multifunctional Materials – A Case Study of Hydrogen Storage Tanks”.

With more than 2,000 participants and over 100 graphene-related presentations and posters, the event provided an excellent platform for exchange with the international 2D-materials community.

Fraunhofer ICT is a partner in GIANCE, a project of the European Graphene research, and leads the project’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) activities.

This visit to Brazil was also a great opportunity to build on the discussions initiated during Graphene Week 2026 in Porto, where Ana Claudia participated in the 1st EU–Brazil International Workshop, hosted by the Graphene Flagship. The workshop aimed to foster a better understanding of potential opportunities for scientific collaboration between the Brazilian and European graphene communities in the field of 2D materials.

It was especially interesting to see these connections develop further at B-MRS. Professor Glaura Goulart Silva from the Center for Nanomaterials and Graphene Technology at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CTNano/UFMG), who participated in the workshop roundtable in Porto, also gave an oral presentation in the same “2D Materials: Fundamentals and Applications” session where Ana Claudia presented GIANCE’s work.

During her visit, Ana Claudia also had the opportunity to tour the facilities of SENAI Electrochemistry, which is active in graphene research and innovation. The discussions identified several promising opportunities for international R&D cooperation.

We look forward to developing these connections further.
